The owner’s three levels of work

Observe: know the normal sound, temperature, exhaust-water flow, charging voltage, fluid levels and vibration. Most serious faults announce themselves through a change.

Maintain: follow the model-specific schedule for oil, filters, coolant, belts, impellers, anodes, drive lubricant and inspections. Record hours, dates, part numbers and findings.

Diagnose: prove whether the problem is fuel, air, cooling, electrical, exhaust, mechanical or propulsion related before buying parts. A disciplined diagnosis is faster and cheaper than replacing whatever looks suspicious.

The safest owner is not necessarily the person who can rebuild an injection pump. It is the person who notices a new leak, knows which seacock feeds the engine, reacts correctly to an alarm and can give a technician precise information.
