Repowering means replacing an engine and adapting the boat around it. The purchase price is only one line in the project.
Repair, rebuild or replace?
Repair makes sense when the failure is isolated, parts are supported and the surrounding installation is sound. A rebuild can preserve a well-matched mechanical installation, but the term must be defined: a cylinder-head job, in-frame overhaul and fully machined long-engine rebuild are not equivalent. Replacement becomes stronger when corrosion, obsolete parts, repeated failures, poor access and ageing exhaust, controls or transmission combine.
Build a complete scope
- Engine, gearbox or saildrive and instrument panel
- Mount beds, feet, coupling and alignment
- Shaft, propeller, ratio and rotation compatibility
- Fuel supply and return
- Raw-water intake, strainer and flow capacity
- Wet exhaust diameter, back pressure, waterlock and anti-siphon layout
- Ventilation and service access
- Start battery, cables, alternator and house-bank charging strategy
- Controls, stop system and alarms
- Hot-water connections and ancillary loads
- Lifting, yard, haul-out, engineering, fabrication and commissioning
- Registration, insurance, survey and documentation implications
An engine that fits the hole may not fit the system. A different crankshaft height can require bed modification. A different exhaust outlet may undermine water-intrusion protection. More horsepower may exceed the gearbox, shaft, drive, propeller aperture or structural design.
Obtain written quotes with exclusions and commissioning tests. Keep serial numbers, drawings, compliance documents, warranty conditions, fluid specifications and baseline sea-trial data.
