Installation quality often determines reliability more than the badge on the engine. The installer must combine manufacturer limits with the vessel’s actual waterline, heel, structure, ventilation and operating duty.
Installation checklist
Structure: engine beds carry weight, torque and thrust without damaging the hull. Fasteners, backing, corrosion isolation and lifting points need engineering judgement.
Access: filters, dipsticks, pumps, belts, heat-exchanger caps, fuel shut-offs and seacocks should be serviceable. Clearance around a new engine is part of the design.
Fuel: approved hose and pipe, accessible shut-offs, correct return arrangement, filtration, venting and fire protection.
Cooling: correctly sized through-hull, seacock, strainer, hoses and raw-water path. Account for heeling and priming.
Exhaust: respect maximum back pressure and design against siphoning and drain-back in every realistic waterline condition. A VETUS marine genset installation manual emphasises that seawater intrusion can be catastrophic and that installer judgement must address trim, sea and heel conditions.
Electrical: short protected starter circuits, sound negative return, correct overcurrent protection, compatible charging and compliant AC work.
Propulsion: correct gear ratio, shaft geometry, coupling, propeller and final in-water alignment.
Commissioning record
Document fluid levels, cranking voltage, oil pressure, charging output, coolant temperature, exhaust-water flow, maximum loaded rpm, speed, vibration, exhaust appearance and all leaks. Reinspect mounts, clamps, levels and alignment after the initial running period specified by the equipment makers.
