A saildrive bolts to the engine or reduction gear and turns the drive through roughly 90 degrees, sending power down a leg through the hull to a horizontal propeller shaft. The leg is supported and sealed at the hull by a model-specific mounting and diaphragm system.
Why saildrives are common
They package the engine efficiently, reduce the long shaft line required by a conventional installation and can present the propeller to cleaner water at a favourable angle. Twin saildrives work well in catamarans because each engine and drive can form a compact independent propulsion system.
What makes them different
The underwater housing is commonly aluminium. Its protective coating, specified anodes and electrical relationship with the propeller and vessel bonding system are critical. Copper-bearing antifouling paint applied directly to an aluminium leg can promote serious corrosion. Use only coatings approved for the drive material and follow the drive manufacturer’s separation instructions.
The hull seal is not an ordinary gasket. It is a safety-critical, time-limited component with inspection and replacement rules set by the drive maker. For example, an older Yanmar SD operation manual specifies periodic inspection and a five-year replacement for the rubber diaphragm on the covered models. That number must not be copied to another model. Volvo Penta, Yanmar and other drives have their own current schedules.
Essential owner checks
- Inspect drive oil for level, leakage and milkiness.
- Monitor anode consumption and investigate unusually rapid or absent wastage.
- Check coating damage and fishing-line damage around the propeller shaft seals.
- Test any diaphragm leak alarm.
- Inspect the diaphragm area for oil, water, cracking, distortion or unauthorised sealants.
- Confirm the propeller, hub and anode arrangement matches the manual.
