Pod systems place steerable geared propulsion units beneath the hull and integrate them with electronic steering, throttles and often joystick control. Volvo Penta IPS is a prominent example. These systems can provide excellent manoeuvring and an integrated helm experience, but they require model-trained service, electronic diagnostics and careful attention to seals, oil, corrosion protection and impact history.
Waterjets draw water through an intake and accelerate it through a nozzle. They remove the exposed propeller and can suit shallow-draft or fast craft. Their inspection priorities include intake blockage, grate damage, impeller and wear-ring condition, shaft seals, steering bucket operation and corrosion.
These layouts sit outside the centre of this yacht-focused guide, but the same diagnostic rule applies: separate the engine from the propulsion system. If engine rpm rises normally but boat speed or thrust does not, look downstream at the clutch, gear, shaft, drive, intake or propeller. If the engine cannot reach commanded rpm, first determine whether it is overloaded or starved of fuel or air.
Because pods and jets are integrated systems, casual substitution of lubricants, anodes, wiring or parts is risky. Obtain the exact serialised documentation and service record before purchase.
