Saildrive vs Shaft Drive

Compare saildrive and shaft-drive yacht propulsion for efficiency, maintenance, corrosion, leaks, cost and offshore cruising.

The better system is the one that suits the hull, is correctly installed, can be supported where the boat travels and has been maintained with evidence.

For a used yacht, service history can outweigh type. A ten-year-old saildrive with undocumented diaphragm and heavy corrosion is not equivalent to one with dated invoices, correct coatings and clean oil. A shaft drive with a worn bearing, scored shaft and misaligned engine can also require major work.

When buying, budget the system rather than the engine alone. Include haul-out, propeller, mounts, controls, exhaust, cooling, access modifications and underwater work. Read surveying a used marine engine before making an offer.
