An engine space needs combustion air and enough ventilation to control temperature. Insufficient airflow can reduce power, raise temperatures and shorten the life of alternators, hoses, batteries and electronics. Vent sizing is an installation calculation, not a guess based on the old engine.
Sound insulation must be marine-suitable, secured against vibration, protected from fuel and oil, and kept away from hot or moving parts. Closing every gap may reduce noise while also starving the engine of air. Treat airflow and acoustic design together.
Fire prevention priorities
- Repair fuel, oil and exhaust leaks immediately.
- Keep absorbent material and stored gear away from hot surfaces.
- Protect high-current cables and terminals.
- Maintain insulation on dry exhaust sections.
- Keep access to fuel shut-offs, battery isolation and seacocks.
- Inspect portable and fixed fire systems at their required intervals.
- Stop ventilation fans when the vessel’s fire plan requires it.
Do not open an engine hatch casually during a confirmed compartment fire. Extra oxygen can intensify the fire and defeat a fixed extinguishing system. Shut down fuel, machinery and ventilation using remote controls if fitted, raise the alarm and follow the vessel’s emergency plan.
Carbon monoxide is colourless and can collect around cabins, cockpits and swim platforms, particularly when idling, moving slowly, rafted beside another boat or running a generator. Maritime Safety Queensland recommends testing carbon-monoxide alarms and confirming exhaust cooling-water flow before each trip.
