Changing Fuel Filters and Bleeding Air

Learn the safe sequence for changing primary and secondary marine diesel filters and removing air from the system.

The exact bleeding process differs. Some engines have a manual lift-pump lever, some self-prime with an electric pump and some common-rail systems prohibit loosening injector pipes.

General preparation

Close or control the fuel supply as the installation requires. Place absorbent material beneath the filter. Confirm replacement element, seals and any drain-ring kit. Clean around the housing before opening it so dirt cannot enter the clean side.

Replace seals in their correct grooves and lubricate only as specified. A forgotten old O-ring or drain seal can cause an invisible air leak. Fill a filter before installation only when the manufacturer permits it and only with exceptionally clean fuel introduced on the correct side.

Bleed from low pressure towards the engine using the designated screws or priming process. Never crank the starter continuously. Observe starter duty limits and prevent the wet exhaust filling during prolonged cranking.

After starting, inspect every disturbed joint at idle and under load. Wipe the area dry, then use clean tissue or paper to reveal seepage. Never use a hand to search for a high-pressure leak.

If filters block again quickly, the problem is in the tank or supplied fuel. Repeatedly changing elements treats the symptom. See diesel bug and water contamination.
