Read the model procedure first. Confirm oil specification, total and change quantity, filter number, drain method and required temperature. Prepare absorbent pads, waste containers and a spare filter before starting.
General workflow
- Warm the engine only as required to make oil pumpable.
- Stop it, isolate accidental starting and protect the bilge.
- Extract or drain the oil through the designed point.
- Remove the filter without spilling its contents.
- Confirm the old filter gasket came away with the filter.
- Clean the sealing face and fit the new filter exactly as instructed.
- Refill with less than the expected final amount.
- Run briefly while watching oil-pressure indication and checking leaks.
- Stop, allow oil to settle as specified, then bring the level to the correct mark.
- Record hours, date, oil and filter details; dispose of waste through an approved facility.
Do not overtighten a spin-on filter. Do not assume its full printed capacity will drain during a routine change. Overfilling is not harmless.
If used oil contains water, metal, an abnormal fuel smell or unexpectedly heavy soot, keep a sample and investigate. For trend analysis, take samples consistently from warm, mixed oil and use the laboratory’s sampling method.
